Scott was a wonderful friend and teammate. I remember we were going to a dance one night and a group of us were at Scott's date's home waiting for Scott and he was late. His date, and I can't remember her name, was getting madder and madder as Scott was later and later. Finally when he walked in he immediately apologized because he had been golfing. His date said, "Well, I got teed off about 7:00PM." And as only Scott could respond, he said, "I didn't know you went golfing too." If you knew Scott you will understand this post. I'll miss you "Big Fella."
At the reunion we heard that Scott was not doing well. I thought then and it is heightened now what good memories I have of our time together on the football field. What I remember most is practices when the coaches were trying to get the big lug to get lower so he could get under the offensive lineman and raise him up to get rid of him. He listened and learned, but that meant that playing linebacker behind him meant I couldn't see over his big behind. He told me to either get taller or play smarter. Great guy and I will cherish those memories. Sleep well, Scott.
Reading these memories is bittersweet -- a word for which I thank Mary Dittoe. . .
The "jocks" and the girls we were -- sigh. The loss of a "gentle giant," a big, good guy -- smile. The fact that we signed a Memories of 1965 booklet for him at our 50th that Scott kept and pointed out to everyone who came in his nursing home room.
We drift, disconnect, disagree, divorce, never come back "home, whatever." As we near this phase of life's cycle, I think that celebrating and supporting each other for what we had is pretty cool.
We are thinking about getting together again next summer. . .
